Description
Breathtaking 1878 Half Dollar, PR68
The Finest Certified Example
1878 50C PR68 NGC. Type Two Reverse. The present coin is the
single finest certified 1878 proof half dollar. Examination of
NGC/PCGS population figures reveals that a goodly number of the
800-piece mintage has survived to the present day, with the vast
majority falling into the PR62 to PR65 range. Fewer than 20
specimens are designated Premium Gems, and a solitary coin rates
PR67.The current PR68 displays a beautiful blend of cobalt-blue and lavender around the obverse borders framing the silver-gray central area, while a sliver of beige-gold clings to the reverse margin, ceding to dominant cobalt-blue on the remaining surface. A solid strike brings out virtually full detail on the design features, all of which stand out against the mirrored fields. As expected, immaculate preservation characterizes both sides. These attributes add up to breathtaking, unsurpassable eye appeal. Housed in a prior generation holder.
