1882 Half Dollar, PR68
Exceptional Patina
WB-102, Misplaced Date

1882 50C PR68 NGC. WB-102. In 1882, circulation mintages of dimes finally returned to a "normal" level of production, four years after the Bland-Allison Act obligated the Mint to coin prodigious amounts of silver dollars. However, mintages of Seated quarters remained at token quantity until 1888, and Seated half dollar production was also minimal until a modest bump in 1891.

Exquisite sea-green, powder-blue, cherry-red, and straw-gold embrace both sides of this well-struck, flashy Superb Gem 1882 proof half dollar -- among the finest certified, and unquestionably also among the most attractively toned. The upper curves of two misplaced date digits emerge from the dentils beneath the spaces between the 18 and the 88 in the date. NGC shows one each PR68, PR68 ★ Cameo, and PR68 Ultra Cameo; PCGS has yet to certify any above the PR67 level (3/15).
