Description

1886 Seated Half Dollar, PR68
The Finest-Known Example

1886 50C PR68 NGC. WB-101. This late date in the Seated Liberty series saw a low total mintage of 5,886 pieces, 886 of which were proofs. Because so few of the business strikes were saved, proof examples from this year are more available than coins struck for circulation, and frequently targeted by type collectors over their business strike counterparts.

This beautiful specimen is the finest-known example of the date, regardless of proof or business strike status; with no other coins graded at the 68 level by either of the major services. It is meticulously detailed throughout, with gorgeous blended toning in hues of mint-green, lilac, yellow-gold, and deep purple. The surfaces are exquisitely preserved and free of even the tiniest mark or distraction. Census: 1 in 68, 0 finer (7/14).
