    Description

    1843 Quarter, PR64
    Previously Unrecorded Specimen

1843 25C PR64 PCGS. CAC. The number of proof quarters struck in 1843 is unknown, but undoubtedly very low. Proof production in this period was low for each denomination, and the coins were often struck on-demand. We have previously been been able to only trace six proofs, one of which is permanently held in the Smithsonian Institution. This piece does not show any of the pedigree identifiers of the known coins, making it the seventh piece known. The fields on each side are deeply reflective. This would be expected of a proof from any era, but it is especially surprising on this piece because each side is covered with deep layers of rose-golden toning that turns blue around the margins. Our research has yielded the following roster:

    1. PR66 NGC. The Kaufman specimen. 1946 ANA Sale (Numismatic Gallery, 8/1946), lot 442 (unplated); John Jay Pittman Collection (David Akers, 5/1998), lot 1309; ANA Signature (Heritage, 7/2008), lot 1808, where it realized $74,750; Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2013), lot 4218, where it brought $64,625.
