Description

1845 Quarter, PR64
One of Eight Known Proofs
Ex: Newman

1845 25C PR64 NGC. CAC. Briggs 5-E. Ex: Eric P. Newman. Like all other known proof 1845 quarters, this piece has the date (845) heavily repunched to the right with the original digits left of the final position. Every vertical shield line on the reverse extends into the horizontal crossbars, most nearly reaching the top of the shield. There are no die cracks, clash marks, or other die anomalies.

We are aware of eight distinct examples of the 1845 proof quarter, one of which is permanently impounded in the Smithsonian Institution. The other seven coins are privately held. This example, long hidden away as part of the Eric P. Newman Collection before surfacing in 2013, is ranked sixth but it is virtually as fine as the coins ranked higher, including the Pittman-Kaufman-Gardner example in PR66 and the PR65 Eliasberg coin.

This spectacular near-Gem exhibits light ivory surfaces with powder-blue peripheral toning on the obverse and deep blue patina with splashes of champagne on the reverse. The design elements are boldly detailed as expected. A few faint hairlines are minimal for the grade.
Ex: Eric P. Newman / Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2013), lot 3904, where it realized $30,550.
