Description

    1845 Seated Liberty Quarter, PR64+
Only Six or Seven Examples Known

1845 25C PR64+ PCGS. CAC. Briggs 5-E. The proof 1845 Seated quarter is an extreme rarity and significantly underrated as such. The mintage is unknown, but has been estimated at about six pieces in the past. Walter Breen listed only five auction appearances in his Proof Encyclopedia. We believe at least seven individual coins have survived, including a piece in the Smithsonian Institution, formerly from the complete set in the Mint Cabinet Collection. This figure is consistent with the number of proof dimes and half dollars confirmed to exist of this date -- eight and seven coins, respectively -- as one would expect for an issue which was apparently distributed in complete denomination sets.

The combined PCGS and NGC certified population lists 14 examples in all grades, this figure reflecting a significant number of resubmissions. The present Choice example displays bold motifs and mirrored fields. Subtle cameo contrast on each side is observed amid shades of golden-gray, violet, olive-brown, and pine-green toning. There are no distracting marks. Only three coins are known finer. Population: 4 in 64 (1 in 64+), 0 finer. CAC: 4 in 64, None finer (5/16).(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 23W8, PCGS# 5539)

    Weight: 6.68 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
