Description

    1845 Quarter Dollar, PR65
Tied for Second-Finest of Eight Proofs
    Modest Field-Device Contrast

1845 25C PR65 NGC. Briggs 5-E. This Gem proof 1845 Seated quarter is tied with the Clapp-Eliasberg-Kaufman-Gardner coin as the second-finest known. Only the Menjou-Pittman-Kaufman-Gardner PR66 coin is finer. The present piece is a new discovery for our roster, appearing out of an old-time collection and here plated in an auction catalog for the first time. The number of proof 1845 quarters now tallies to eight, which matches the number of proof dimes known for this date. The Briggs estimate of "approximately 6 proofs" was formed while both the present coin and the Eric. P. Newman example were hidden away.

This piece shows the boldly recut date that is diagnostic of the proof die pair. The strike is fully rendered, and a touch of field-device contrast accentuates warm amber-gold toning that blankets each side. Eye appeal is outstanding, even for the Gem grade. Census: 2 in 65, 1 finer (3/16).(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 23W8, PCGS# 5539)

    Weight: 6.68 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
