Description

    1846 Quarter Dollar, PR64
    Among Finest at PCGS

1846 25C PR64 PCGS. A few years ago Larry Briggs wrote a two-part series in the Coin Dealer Newsletter in which he stated that the 1846 was among the more "common" proofs of the 1840s, "if there is such a thing, with 15-18 pieces." Perhaps that was the original mintage, but we think such an estimate is far overblown if he meant survival to the present day. In fact, the PCGS population stands at eight submissions in PR64 with none finer, the same as when we last handled this piece eight years ago. Light rose and lilac hues prevail on this lustrous near-Gem, with bright fields forming a perfect backdrop for the sharply defined devices. A few minuscule marks appear in the fields under a loupe. Population: 8 in 64, 0 finer (12/12).
Ex: Rarities Sale (Bowers and Merena, 1/2002), lot 407, which realized $9,200; JFS Collection / Pittsburgh Signature (Heritage, 8/2004), lot 4042, which brought $8,625.(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 23W9, PCGS# 5540)
