Description

1846 Quarter, Sparkling PR65
Tied for Finest Known

1846 25C PR65 NGC. Briggs 4-F. Ex: Ashland City. Recent estimates suggest 15-20 1846 proof Seated quarters are extant, while PCGS CoinFacts notes an even smaller surviving population, at 8-10 examples in all grades. Heritage catalogers have traced 13 pieces that we believe are different examples, including one in the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution. The proofs were struck by a distinct die pair described by Larry Briggs as the 4-F die marriage. Its most distinctive characteristic is several vertical shield stripes extending downward beyond the reverse shield border near its bottom point. On this example, evenly distributed tan-lilac toning bathes both sides with intense electric-blue and lavender undertones visible at certain angles. The iridescent colors dance across brightly reflective fields when this Gem quarter is viewed at an advantageous angle. The glassy fields form a perfect backdrop for the sharply defined motifs. A short mark in the field above Liberty's foot helps establish this coin's pedigree. Violet, gold, and blue hues shift and glimmer throughout both the obverse and the reverse of this PR65 example, which is tied for the finest-certified 1846 proof according to PCGS and NGC combined population data.
