Description

    1847 Seated Quarter, PR66
    Ex: Eliasberg, Extraordinary Quality
    Tied for Finest Certified

1847 25C PR66 NGC. Briggs 8-E. According to David Akers, the 1847 proof quarters were struck only as part of the original proof sets, with between 10 and 15 sets produced. The issue shares the same reverse with the equally rare 1846 and 1848 proofs, with several of the vertical shield lines extending far below the bottom of the reverse shield. We have traced but eight surviving specimens, which have shared the auction spotlight from time to time over the past dozen years, with the exception of this Eliasberg piece. To our knowledge this is its first public auction appearance in many years.

This extraordinary Premium Gem shares the finest-known distinction with the Atwater/Pittman coin. Both are graded PR66 NGC. PCGS has yet to assign such a high grade to any 1847 proof quarter. The coin is glassy-mirrored and beautifully toned, with glittering wheat-gold toning surrounded by magenta, lemon-yellow, and gunmetal-blue accents. The strike is razor-sharp throughout, with virtually mark-free surfaces and fantastic eye appeal. The perfect square rims show a wire edge surrounding most of both the obverse and reverse. It is hard to imagine a more impressive quarter proof from the 1840s era. Census: 2 in 66, 0 finer (9/15).(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 23WA, PCGS# 5541)

    Weight: 6.68 grams
