Description

Arrows and Rays Quarter in Proof

1853 Arrows and Rays PR 65 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg. Of the greatest rarity and importance as a one-year proof type coin, only a handful of true proofs are known of this issue--even prooflike business strikes are rarely encountered. The obverse diagnostics for proofs matches exactly the description in Briggs' reference on the series, but the die scratches on the reverse are less obvious, but there is no doubt about the status of this impressive coin.
The surfaces are bright from having been struck from polished dies and show die striations as a result, in addition to a few scattered hairlines from having been wiped at one time. Light in color, the slate-gray color overall shows an undertone of pale rose and blue that adds even more visual interest. Identifiable by a dark splotch of color to the right of the shin of Liberty and two spots on the drapery below the elbow.
Ex: Acquired by J.M. Clapp (as "Uncirculated") at an early date, probably prior to 1894; John H. Clapp, Clapp Estate, 1942, to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; Eliasberg Collection (B&M, 4/97), lot 1454.
