Description

    Choice Proof 1856 Quarter
    Low Unrecorded Mintage

1856 25C PR64 PCGS. The mintage of the proof 1856 quarter is unknown, but it must have been minimal given that PCGS has certified just 26 specimens in all grades, about one per year of its existence. Briggs identifies the diagnostic of a proof of this date as, "a large die bulge on reverse that extends from above right wing to 'L' of 'DOL.' " This diagnostic bulge is immediately evident on this coin, which would be immediately identifiable as a proof in any event due to its mirrored fields and exceptional clarity of detail. Faint tan-gold toning covers the unblemished surfaces, but moderate cameo contrast is nonetheless evident. An uncommon opportunity for the connoisseur of early proof coinage. Housed in a green label PCGS holder. Population: 8 in 64, 4 in 64 Cameo, 1 finer as 65 (4/12).
    Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2007), lot 915, which realized $12,650.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 23WH, PCGS# 5552)

    Weight: 6.22 grams
