Description

NGC 1857 PR 65. Probably fewer than 20 proofs are known of this scarce, early date. Struck from the same dies as the 1856 proof quarters, this piece shows the diagnostic die bulge on the reverse that extends from the AM of AMERICA down to the arrows. The fields do not appear all that deeply mirrored, most likely because the multiple layerings of deep blue, violet, and rose tend to subdue the flash in the fields. Nevertheless, this is an unmistakable proof and a special coin as such. There are no obvious or distracting blemishes on either side of this rare date proof quarter. Population: 3 in 65, none are finer (10/94).
