Description

    Rare, Near-Gem 1858 Proof Quarter

1858 PR 64 PCGS. First year that proofs were made commercially available to collectors, 1858 is generally considered the starting point for modern U.S. proof coinage. Only 80 or so proofs were struck and almost all of the survivors show lint marks somewhere on the surfaces from the dies having been wiped with a cloth and lint adhering because of static electricity. There are a couple of squiggly lint marks on the obverse and a long planchet flaw on the reverse above the eagle's head. Brightly mirrored, the surfaces show rich olive-green, blue, and golden patina over both sides. Population: 7 in 64, only 2 finer (12/95). (NGC ID# 23WK, PCGS# 5554)

    Weight: 6.22 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
