Description

Elusive Gem Proof 1860 Seated Quarter, Briggs 9-H Variety

1860 25C PR65 NGC. This coin mates a Type Two obverse hub variety with a Type One reverse hub variety. Writing in 1991, Larry Briggs (who described this variety as Briggs 9-H) was obviously elated over the discovery of this hub marriage when he wrote, "The proof die 9-H, obverse Type 2, reverse Type 1, does exist!" As an issue, the proof 1860 has a very poor rate of survival, particularly at the Gem level of preservation. Most coins were undoubtedly melted as unsold at year's end. Virtually completely brilliant, this bright specimen is sharply struck in the centers with no bothersome surface blemishes. Population: 11 in 65, with a mere four finer (4/02). (NGC ID# 23WM, PCGS# 5556)

    Weight: 6.22 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
