Description

Handsome Gem Proof 1860 Quarter

1860 25C PR65 PCGS. Type Two Obverse, Type One Reverse. Delicate pastel tan-gold patina, accented with whispers of cobalt-blue and lavender at the margins, dominates each side of the present Gem. The design elements are sharply struck, save for softness in some of the star centers. A few wispy marks are located near star 3. Of the 1,000 proof quarters struck in 1860, Larry Briggs, in his The Comprehensive Encyclopedia of United States Liberty Seated Quarters, mentions that 458 pieces were melted. Unexpectedly elusive, 1860 proofs are scarcer than those of subsequent dates. Population: 15 in 65, 7 finer (11/08).
Ex: Dallas Signature (Heritage, 4/2007), lot 647, which realized $4,600.
