    Description

    1865 Quarter, PR66 Cameo
Final No Motto Issue, Rare With Contrast

1865 25C PR66 Cameo NGC. Briggs 3-B. Blue-green, purple, and golden-russet coloration frames the mostly brilliant, thickly frosted portrait of Liberty on the obverse. The reverse is virtually untoned, aside from touches of rose and reddish-gold color at the rims. Bold field-device contrast and minimal contact marks round out the appeal of this Premium Gem Cameo proof.

Variety: Briggs 3-B, attributed by the rusted obverse die and the position of the 1 relative to the eighth and ninth shield verticals. Briggs notes a few small die chips in the left field near the rock that are faintly visible on this example.

Population Data (9/15): This coin is tied with six other PR66 Cameo examples at NGC (one in PR66 Cameo) with six finer submissions. PCGS reports three in the same grade with a single PR68 Cameo finer.

Heritage Commentary: This is the final No Motto issue in the Seated quarter series. A mintage of 500 proofs accompanied the production of 58,800 circulation strikes in 1865. Over 75% of the proofs certified at NGC are non-Cameos, and less than 22% of the certified population at that service has been awarded a Cameo designation. The marked contrast on this example and its impressive technical grade make it an important numismatic rarity.

    Provenance: Superior (7/2005), lot 1023.(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 23WT, PCGS# 85561)

    Weight: 6.22 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
