Description

1865 Quarter, PR68 Cameo
Sole Finest Within the Designation

1865 25C PR68 Cameo NGC. Briggs 3-B. There are currently five 1865 Seated quarter submissions graded PR68 between NGC and PCGS combined. This may seem odd for a silver issue from the final year of the Civil War and, indeed, many proof 1865 quarters were probably carelessly handled during the general chaos of the era. The obverse die of this issue is readily identifiable by the presence of a few small lumps (as produced) on Liberty's portrait. The most prominent are on Liberty's torso and right (facing) thigh. The point of the shield is over the upright of the 1 in the date, and the left base of the same digit is over the left side of a denticle.

The present example is the only 1865 PR68 Seated quarter with a Cameo designation (6/13). Both sides of this beautiful specimen display stark contrast between the fully frosted devices and deeply mirrored, glassy fields. Light golden iridescence covers the devices, none of which reveal any grade-limiting blemishes. We expect that specialists will follow bidding on this coin with great enthusiasm and interest.
