Description

Gem Proof 1868 Quarter

1868 25C PR65 NGC. Briggs 2-B. This obverse die, which was used exclusively for proofs of this date, displays triple punching on the first digit in the date and light recutting inside the upper loop of the final 8. There is also a die break on the scroll between the ER in LIBERTY, and a lump attached to the scroll at the bottom on the letter B. The latter two are curious features for a proof die, but, nonetheless, they make it easy for one to distinguish between proofs and business strikes of the 1868 quarter. This proof striking displays razor sharp definition in all areas with sparkling, deeply mirrored fields. Colorful cobalt-blue toning at the borders gradually changes to magenta, then deep golden-red at the central regions. Census: 12 in 65, 11 finer (8/07).
