Description

Deeply Toned 1868 Quarter, PR 66

1868 PR 66 NGC. The Philadelphia Mint's low output of only 29,400 business strike quarters in 1868 has placed tremendous collector pressure on the surviving proof specimens. This original gem is among the finest certified and, quite possibly, one of the best preserved survivors from an original proof delivery of only 600 pieces. The die chip below the B in LIBERTY and the recutting on the 1 that characterize all proofs of this issue are both discernible under magnification. Interwoven hues of russet, charcoal, blue, lavender, and gold shade the obverse while the reverse displays thick, deep charcoal patination. Although this toning inhibits the proof qualities of this piece, the underlying fields are clearly reflective and Liberty's body is heavily frosted. There are no abrasions worthy of note and the surfaces do full justice to the impressive grade designation. Population: 6 in 66, none finer (6/99). (NGC ID# 23WZ, PCGS# 5567)

    Weight: 6.22 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
