1869 Seated Quarter, PR67
1869 25C PR67 NGC. CAC. Briggs 2-B. Ex: Kaufman. Richly
toned in blue and antique-copper shades, the surfaces are uniformly
reflective without a troublesome blemish to report. A lamp is
needed to discern cobalt-blue undertones, but the needle-sharp
proof strike is immediately apparent. The lightest suggestion of
red patination occurs along the lower reverse denticles.
Among the Finest Graded, Ex: Kaufman
Variety: Briggs 2-B. Strong die doubling is noted throughout the obverse.
Population Data (9/15): NGC reports three submitted in PR67 (one in PR67 ★ ) and none finer, while the finest at PCGS are five in PR66.
Heritage Commentary: Like the other P-mint Motto Seated quarters from the 1860s, the 1869 was produced in limited numbers as a business strike (in this case, only 16,000 pieces). Consequently, high-quality date collectors are often forced to call upon exceptionally well-preserved proofs to represent this issue. This Superb Gem proof is a perfect candidate.
