Description

    1871 Quarter, PR67
    The Kaufman Collection Example

1871 25C PR67 NGC. Briggs 1-A. Ex: Kaufman. With smooth surfaces and gorgeous original toning, it is little wonder that this coin is one of the finest certified survivors from this proof delivery. Swirls of reddish-copper color appear toward the upper right obverse and lower right reverse borders. The balance of the features are awash in cobalt-blue shades that yield to golden undertones at direct light angles. Every feature is unsurprisingly razor-sharp with glistening mint frost.

Variety: Briggs 1-A. The presence of a small die rust lump on the drapery above and to the right of (LIBERT)Y on the scroll confirms the variety.

Population Data (9/15): Only four proofs are certified in this lofty grade at NGC with a single PR68 submission finer. PCGS reports four Premium Gems (one in PR66+) and none finer.

Heritage Commentary: According to Larry Briggs' Comprehensive Encyclopedia of United States Liberty Seated Quarters (1991), a number of extant proof 1871 Seated quarters are impaired to one degree or another. That could not be further from the truth with this unquestionably original, problem-free Superb Gem. From a mintage of 960 proofs.

    Provenance: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2003), lot 6729; Baltimore Signature (Heritage, 7/2003), lot 6966.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 23X4, PCGS# 5570)

    Weight: 6.22 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
