Description

Beautifully Toned PR67 1874 Arrows Quarter

1874 25C Arrows PR67 NGC. The 1874 quarter is only available with arrows on each side of the date--unlike the 1873, which is available with and without the arrowheads. The curious thing about the arrows on this two-year type is that they are level on the 1873 coins and point slightly upward on the 1874s. We point this out ever so often in our catalogs, but no one has ever corresponded with us and explained why this is so.
This is a pristine proof striking. The fields are deeply reflective and glassy. The devices have a slight but noticeable overlay of mint frost, which is somewhat surprising given the toning that is present. The obverse shows olive green and rose-gold colors intermixed, while the reverse has a scarlet center that is surrounded by deep cobalt blue. Fully struck throughout. Census: 6 in 67, 1 finer (8/07).(Registry values: P2)
