Description

    Cameo Gem Proof 1875 Quarter

1875 25C PR65 Cameo NGC. CAC. Type One Reverse. Larry Briggs (1991) writes: "Auction sales over the last decade show the 1875 proof quarter to be the rarest proof quarter of either the 1870's or 1880's proof quarters! Possibly the mintage being incorrect or many proofs of this year being melted. Regardless quite elusive and underrated." We would add that Gem-quality Cameos, such as the example in this lot, are especially difficult to locate, as the census figures below indicate. The pronounced field-motif contrast on this untoned example is evident at all angles, and the design elements are sharply struck, save for the usual weakness in most of the star centers. Census: 7 in 65 Cameo, 2 finer (11/08).
