Description

    1878 Quarter, PR67
    One Proof Graded Finer

1878 25C PR67 NGC. Briggs 4-D. Mint-green complements violet and blue patina on the obverse, while the reverse is a shade lighter with mostly golden-gray coloration. This Superb Gem proof is entirely devoid of consequential flaws, even upon close study. A thin, pedigree-identifying toning streak runs horizontally across the upper obverse.

Variety: Briggs 4-D, attributed by several large die lumps on the reverse shield.

Population Data (9/15): NGC reports three PR67s with a single PR68 finer. PCGS has seen two submissions in PR67 and none rated higher.

Heritage Commentary: The year 1878 marks the introduction of the popularly collected Morgan dollar, and on a related note, it represents the final year before quarter and half dollar mintages began to drop precipitously as silver bullion was directed toward the production of dollars. Proofs from this issue (800 coins struck) are considerably more challenging in high grades than those of subsequent dates.

Gene Gardner also owned the ex: Eric Newman PR68 ★ NGC example of this date, which brought $21,150 in our Gardner Part III Signature (Heritage, 5/2015), lot 98390.

    Provenance: Purchased from Kevin Lipton (1/2013).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 23XA, PCGS# 5579)

    Weight: 6.25 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
