Description

Boldly Cameoed Proof 1879 Seated Liberty Quarter

1879 25C PR66 Cameo NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. Briggs 2-B. The Philadelphia Mint did not prepare any new reverse dies for its delivery of proof Seated Quarters in 1879. Rather, it reused the reverse dies of the proof 1872 and proof 1878 deliveries. With a few die rust lumps (as struck) over the shield, this coin was struck from Reverse D of the proof 1878. A lintmark (also as produced) is seen in the obverse field at Liberty's left (facing) elbow and there are some small, well scattered planchet voids (again, as struck) in the field on the same side, but we can find no mentionable post-production features. Solidly graded at the premium quality Gem level, both sides are bright and untoned with the exception of the lightest suggestions of golden iridescence. One of just 14,700 Quarters produced in 1879, and desirable as such. Population: 5 in 66 Cameo, there are none finer (10/02).
