Description

1879 25C PR66 NGC. Briggs 2-B. Struck from the same reverse used for the 1878 proofs, although the die was rusted with small lumps in the reflective shield stripes. Other proofs for 1879 used a reverse from 1872. Sun-gold toning covers both sides, deepening slightly at the rims. The fields on both sides show deep reflectivity and the motifs are fully struck including the star centers. An attractive Premium Gem example -- few proofs are finer. Census: 24 in 66 (2 in 66 ), 10 finer (4/16).
