    Description

    1880 Quarter, PR67
    Beautiful Rainbow-Toned Obverse

1880 25C PR67 NGC. Briggs 2-A. A medley of gold, blue, green, and rose-violet patina dominates the obverse, especially over Liberty's portrait, while the reverse is mostly electric-blue and mint-green. Fully brought up in all areas (typical of a proof strike), the surfaces fail to reveal a single blemish that would call into question the PR67 grade. A lovely, original representative of this, the second lowest total-mintage issue from the conclusion of the Seated quarter series (1879-1891).

Variety: Briggs 2-A. This variety shows the only obverse proof die for the year paired with a Type One reverse proof die that was first used in 1872. A large cut extends from the eagle's feathers through the left (facing) shield line.

Population Data (9/15): The NGC Census shows 16 submissions in PR67 (three in PR67 ) with five PR68 (one PR68+) finer. PCGS reports nine PR67 (one PR67+) and two PR68 finer.

Heritage Commentary: Breen's Proof Encyclopedia (1989) states that, like proof dimes issued in the same year, "some 1,000 [1880 proof quarters] struck in first quarter, 460 in second, total 1,460 of which 1,355 were delivered in the sets, the remaining 105 melted as unsold." Gene Gardner also owned for a short while the ex: Eric Newman PR68+ NGC example of this date.

Provenance: ANA Signature Heritage, 8/2001), lot 5934; Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 10/2001), lot 6324; purchased from Chris Napolitano (11/2001).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 23XC, PCGS# 5581)
