Description

    1884 Quarter, PR68 Cameo
    Deeply Reflective, Heavily Frosted

1884 25C PR68 Cameo NGC. Briggs 2-B. Writing about the 1884 proof quarters in his Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins, Walter Breen says: "... the first strikes I have seen have mostly shown inferior surfaces (often peppered with tiny nicks), poor borders and shallow relief details compared with any proofs of the period."

This PR68 specimen digresses significantly from Breen's profile. Sharply impressed, heavily frosted design elements stand amid deeply mirrored fields, and crisply defined, dentiled borders that completely encircle the faces of both sides. Whispers of cobalt-blue, purple, and golden-tan patination gravitate around the rims, being better defined and displaying deeper hues on the obverse. A few tiny planchet flakes in the fields do not distract in the least. Census: 2 in 68 Cameo, 2 finer (6/16).
