Description

    1886 Quarter Dollar, PR68
    Tied for Finest Certified

1886 25C PR68 NGC. Briggs 2-B. In the 19th century, collectors more often formed runs of proof Seated quarters than of business strikes. The cost of proof examples has since influenced collector behavior, but certain proofs remain accessible, and in some cases, such as the present, are actually more affordable than business strikes in the same numerical grade.

On this piece, olive and aqua tones blanket the obverse fields, converging to shades of russet and ochre within the figure of Liberty. The rich color surrounds an untoned shield, offering pleasing contrast. The reverse is brilliant and exhibits varied shades between the rim and letters. All elements are deeply impressed on this Superb Gem, produced in an era noted for exquisite proof coinage. Census: 4 in 68, 0 finer (11/15).

Needless to say I was overwhelmed by the results of the auction and I truly believe it was Jill’s efforts in promoting and displaying the piece that brought in the extra value.
