Description

    1891 Quarter, PR64 Cameo
    Lightly Toned Final-Year Type

1891 25C PR64 Cameo PCGS. CAC. Briggs 1-A. A starkly contrasted and minimally toned final-year representative, this Choice proof shows a trace of light powder-blue and olive-tan patina in the fields. The latter color is more prominent on the reverse. Frosty devices and watery mirrors account for the Cameo designation, while the CAC endorsement attests to eye appeal, originality, and quality within the assigned grade.

Variety: Briggs 1-A. Proofs show the left base of the 1 positioned over the left edge of the dentil. The reverse was first used in 1890, showing recut vertical shield lines.

Population Data (9/15): This proof is tied with 23 other PR64 Cameo submissions at PCGS with 25 finer.

Heritage Commentary: The Seated Liberty design was used for the final time in 1891, after dominating American silver coinage for much of the 19th century. The Mint struck 600 proof quarters in that year, accompanying a generous circulation-strike mintage of nearly 4 million coins. The Gardner Collection is largely characterized by colorfully patinated coins, but it is easy to see why Gene Gardner was drawn to this minimally toned piece.

    Provenance: Empire State Collection (Stack's, 1/1997), lot 552.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 597E, PCGS# 85592)

    Weight: 6.25 grams
