    Description

1901 5C Nickel PR 67 NGC. Due to experimentation, most proof Liberty Head nickels struck in the years immediately following the turn of the 20th century lack intense cameo contrast. From the standpoint of the cameo proof collector, however, this piece is certainly one of the more fortunate specimens to emerge from the Philadelphia Mint in 1901. The fields display a depth of reflectivity that certainly does not typify this series. Equally noteworthy is the rich endowment of mint frost over the devices that imparts a stunning black and white appearance to this jewel. The reverse is essentially untoned save for pale blue highlights, but the obverse carries a gorgeous layer of gold patina that is interrupted by a single crescent of lilac peripheral toning about stars 4 through 8. With no abrasions to report, this superb gem nickel easily outstrips the majority of its proof brethren in terms of striking perfection and eye appeal. Neither NGC nor PCGS report a single specimen above the PR 67 grade tier (6/99). (NGC ID# 278B, PCGS# 3899)
