    Description

1895 $1 Dollar PR 66 NGC. The paltry sum of 12,000 business strikes coined at the Philadelphia Mint in 1895 would have been enough to ensure the ultimate rarity of this issue for generations to come. As none of these regular issue silver dollars, however, have ever surfaced within the numismatic community, collectors assume that the federal government consigned all 12,000 pieces to the melting pot during the First World War. The numerous perfectionists among Morgan dollar collectors who still demand an 1895 representation from the Philadelphia Mint have had little choice but to focus their attention on the remaining proof specimens. Of the 880 that the Mint originally coined for public sale, NGC and PCGS combined report 39 specimens in PR 66 with a scant 21 finer (1/99). While we have not handled all of these gem and superb gem pieces, we earnestly believe that few, if any, could compare to the originality and eye appeal of this example. Lavish antique-copper patina adheres to both sides and lightens markedly over the central areas. Blushes of electric-blue and fluorescent-pink highlights are evident, clinging to isolated areas of the denticles. The reverse impression is full, although we note trivial softness of definition on a few of Liberty's curls that does not, however, limit this coin's appeal. While the 9 is unclogged, recutting on the 1 and the upward sloping date establish this coin as an example of the B-1 die variety (Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins: 1722-1977). An important and beautiful piece that deserves to be center stage among not only an 1895 proof set, but a complete set of Morgan dollars as well. (NGC ID# 23XE, PCGS# 7440)
