Description

1880 Eight-Piece Year Set (Business Strikes and Proofs)

1880 Year Set. Not referred to as a proof set because business strikes were substituted for the dime, quarter, and half-dollar, all of which are actually scarcer than their proof counterparts. The sets consists of:
Indian Cent PR 63 Red PCGS. Well frosted with only a few trivial hairlines in the obverse field.
Three-Cent Nickel PR 63 PCGS. Traces of carbon on the obverse, otherwise appearing quite choice.
Shield Nickel PR 64 PCGS. A shimmering example, kept from solid gem status by a faint diagonal mark through the numeral 5.
Seated Liberty Dime MS 63 PCGS. Brilliant and highly lustrous, although not exhibiting any prooflike tendencies.
Seated Liberty Quarter MS 61 PCGS. Semi-reflective, untoned surfaces. One of a mere 13,600 business strikes produced.
Seated Liberty Half-Dollar MS 61 PCGS. Moderately hairlined surfaces that closely resemble that of a proof, being razor sharp with mirrored fields. Just 8,400 pieces were minted.
Trade Dollar PR 61 PCGS. Dipped to brilliance, but without the extensive hairlines one might expect of such a modestly graded proof.
Morgan Dollar PR 62 Uncertified. We see no particular reason why this attractive, minimally hairlined example was not graded with the rest of the set. Both sides exhibit occasional toning about the edges and the obverse is especially well frosted.
