    1898 Six-Piece Proof Set

1898 Proof Set. The year 1898 is probably best remembered for remembering the Maine and yellow journalism, all leading up to that "epic struggle," The Spanish-American War. Proofs from 1898 were often produced with intense field-to-device contrast, and several of these pieces live up to that reputation. They include:
Indian Cent PR 65 Red and Brown PCGS. Only the obverse has mellowed to any significant degree, being partially overlaid in steel-blue and violet.
Liberty Nickel PR 64 PCGS. A strong cameo with a bit of natural haziness on the reverse and a couple of obverse lintmarks that should not affect the grade.
Barber Dime PR 66 PCGS. A spectacular proof whose fields flash with infinite depth of reflectivity and contrast with the chalk-white devices. Just a whisper of peripheral golden color.
Barber Quarter PR 62 PCGS. Murky reddish-golden obverse patina.
Barber Half-Dollar PR 66 PCGS. A breathtaking cameo proof that is brilliant throughout and shows no hairlines in the fields. The devices are snow-white and contrast heavily against the unfathomably deep mirrors in the fields.
Morgan Dollar PR 63 PCGS. Put this magnificent cameo side-by-side with any PR 63 graded example, even any PR 64 of this popular type and you will pick this coin every time. Virtually untoned with heavily frosted features that simply captivate the viewer.
