    1910 Four-Piece Gold Proof Set

1910 Complete Four-Piece Gold Proof Set. A complete set of proof gold, struck in the Roman Gold variant of the matte proofing process, peculiar only to 1909 and 1910. The coins are well matched with uniform surfaces and color. Included are:
Quarter Eagle PR 62 Cleaned. Proof quarter eagles from 1910 have a misleadingly high mintage of 682 pieces. Today perhaps 75-100 quarter eagles are believed extant in all grades. This piece has lost the brightness normally associated with the Roman Gold finish, now being left with a dull surface. There are no nicks, scrapes, or other defects of note, just a lack of luster that accounts for the grade.
Half Eagle PR 62 Lightly Cleaned. Although mint records indicate that 250 proof half eagles were produced in this year (a figure that is also misleadingly high, as with the quarter eagles), it is doubtful that more than 50-55 pieces are known today. Again, like the quarter eagle, the surfaces are free from any distracting contact marks, the grade being derived from a uniform dullness seen over each side. Reddish patina is a constant with each of the coins in this set.
Eagle PR 63 Lightly Cleaned. Like the other gold proofs from this year, the official mintage is suspiciously large with 204 pieces recorded as having been struck. However, the survival rate of 1910 eagles is no higher than other matte proof issues, with an accurate estimate of survivors in the range of 30-45 pieces. Again, the surfaces are uniformly dulled and lack the brightness one expects from the Roman Gold finish of this year. Reddish color. The only surface defect noted is a tiny planchet flaw in the left reverse field.
Double Eagle PR 63 Lightly Cleaned. The official mintage for the 1910 double eagle was 167 pieces, and like the other gold proofs from this year, it also is suspiciously large. While lower estimates of the number of survivors have been offered in the past, we believe the number of proofs extant today to be similar to that of the eagles, that is, 30-45 pieces. As with the other coins in this set there are no reportable marks on either side, just a uniform lackluster appearance with a reddish hue over each side.
A rare opportunity to acquire these coins as a four-piece set.
