Description

This 1878 Proof Set is complete save for the dime. Included are:

1878 1C Cent PR 65 Red and Brown NGC.
Deeply reflective, the otherwise golden-orange faces exhibit brown patination that is more extensive over the reverse. As befits the grade, neither the strike nor the surface preservation are worthy of criticism.

1878 Three Cent Nickel PR 66 NGC. The watery fields and suitably frosted devices combine to impart a modest cameo finish on the obverse. The reverse, on the other hand, is uniformly brilliant. The lightly toned, pristine faces are indicative of the technical superiority that resides at the PR 66 grade tier. A popular proof-only issue, the 1878 boasts an original mintage of 2,350 pieces.

1878 Nickel PR 65 NGC. Although not deeply reflective, this Gem quality example displays razor sharp delineation that could only be the result of proof execution. Smooth and essentially mark-free, the surfaces exhibit a decided lilac-gold cast. The absence of a corresponding business strike delivery has placed considerable collector pressure on this proof issue's extant representatives.

1878 Twenty Cent Piece PR 63 NGC. The last year of twenty cent production, this survivor displays gorgeous orange-russet iridescence over unfathomably deep fields. Moderately frosted, the devices exhibit needle sharp definition that elicits every last design element. The grade-defining hairlines hardly inhibit this piece's overall pleasing appearance for the grade.

1878 Quarter PR 63 NGC. Electric-blue and purple-lilac peripheral toning on the obverse frames the brilliant center. In stark contrast, the reverse is untoned save for isolated russet highlights about the lower rim. This toning scheme does not prevent one's appreciation of the underlying proof qualities, although it does limit the visual impact of the scattered hairlines.

1878 Half PR 64 NGC. The golden-russet peripheral accents are largely confined to the obverse. The nicely impressed devices display a modest endowment of mint frost, but the fields are deep and glassy. Predominantly smooth, the surfaces reveal trivial striking incompleteness on the eagle's left (facing) leg and talon that is worthy of mention.

1878 Trade Dollar PR 64 NGC. The first proof-only Trade dollar issue, the 1878 also boasts the lowest mintage (900 pieces) of all 1878-1883 P-mint deliveries. The present near-Gem example displays milky-white iridescence that deepens to golden-russet highlights in select areas about the denticles. The strike is full and the surfaces are free of all but the most trivial hairlines. The certified population of this issue drops off markedly as one gets above the current grade level.

1878 8TF Dollar PR 64 NGC. The nearly pristine surfaces are untoned save for golden peripheral accents and mottled toning spots in the obverse field above Liberty's head. Every last detail of the moderately frosted features radiates powerfully through the holder. The deeply reflective fields do full justice to a proof striking. A popular one-year type, this is a pleasing coin from the standpoint of originality.

1878 7TF Reverse of 1878 Dollar PR 64 NGC. The more common reverse variety of this proof delivery, this near-Gem representative is, nonetheless, widely pursued by dollar specialists. Undeniably original, both sides display mottled golden-russet iridescence that is markedly more extensive on the reverse. Powerfully impressed and carefully preserved, the surfaces are temptingly close to an even higher grade assessment.
