Description

Elusive Specimen Striking of the 1866 Rays Shield Nickel

1866 5C Rays PR65 NGC. The 2003 Guide Book lists the proof delivery of this first-year Shield Nickel as approximately 200+ pieces. Writing in 1995, however, Gloria Peters and Cynthia Mahon estimate this issue's mintage as at least 375 coins. We believe that the latter figure is closer to the truth, but the rarity and desirability of the proof 1866 Nickel should not be underestimated. It is the only proof of the two-year Rays type that is obtainable for the average collector. This silver-gray example is moderately reflective in the fields with razor sharp striking definition over the devices. There is a very shallow planchet flaw (as produced) in the lower left obverse field, but we can find no bothersome handling marks.
