1866 Rays Nickel, PR66
Important First-Year Issue

1866 5C Rays PR65 PCGS. It was long believed that the mintage of 1866 Rays nickels was 125 or so, a number that Breen linked to the number of silver proof sets. However, it is clear now that far more were struck. The 2010 edition of the Guide Book indicates a mintage of 600+ proofs. Nevertheless, this is an important first-year proof. The surfaces are nearly brilliant with just the slightest overlay of ice-blue patina. The devices are noticeably contrasted against the brightly reflective fields, but the Cameo appellation was not give on these first-generation PCGS holders. The center reverse shows slight porosity, a common problem on early nickel products. Population: 85 in 65, 42 finer (2/10).(Registry values: N2998)
