Description

1866 Rays Nickel, PR65
Above-Average Surfaces

1866 5C Rays PR65 PCGS. The mintage of the 1866 proof nickel is open to debate because mint records were destroyed in 1925 (Peters and Mohon, 1995). Production estimates range from 125 to 500 pieces. The more deeply toned nickel-gray fields of this Gem highlight the lighter, well-struck devices, resulting in modest contrast. The relatively smooth surfaces are free of the significant planchet defects and spotting that plague this issue. Housed in a prior generation holder. Population: 80 in 65, 39 finer (7/14).(Registry values: N2998)
