1866 Rays Nickel, PR66 Cameo
Important First-Year Issue

1866 5C Rays PR66 Cameo NGC. The Philadelphia Mint employed the nickel composition for the five cent coinage for the first time in 1866, having had some experience with the copper-nickel cent during the previous decade. The composition proved challenging for Mint employees, and many poorly produced pieces survive. This Premium Gem Cameo proof is an exception, having full design definition, brilliant mirrored fields, and strong field-to-device contrast. An outstanding first-year nickel coinage for the advanced collector. Census: 27 in 66 Cameo (2 in 66 ), 13 finer (10/19).(Registry values: N4719)
