1866 Rays Nickel, PR66 Cameo
Lightly Toned, Sharply Contrasted
1866 5C Rays PR66 Cameo PCGS. This lovely piece was struck
in the initial year of five cent nickel coinage, and is a
low-mintage, two-year proof type coin with a mintage of "600+"
proofs, according to the 2014 Guide Book, a revised estimate
which was only "200+" several years ago. This is a boldly struck
coin with nicely mirrored fields and the diagnostic center dot is
plain to see on the reverse. What sets this Premium Gem specimen
apart from most proofs seen from this year is sufficient contrast
between the fields and devices to earn it the Cameo designation.
