1866 Rays Nickel, PR66 Cameo
Pleasing First-Year Type Coin
1866 5C Rays PR66 Cameo PCGS. Gleaming fields toned pale
gold highlight frosted nickel-white devices, producing strong
contrast. No contact marks of any consequence impede the impeccably
preserved surfaces. This Premium Gem first-year type coin exhibits
pleasing eye appeal.Population Data (8/15): PCGS reports 30 in PR66 Cameo and three finer, and NGC shows 30 in this grade and 10 finer.
Heritage Commentary: The exact mintage figure of this issue is unknown because Mint records were destroyed in 1925 (Peters and Mohon, 1995). The authors estimate 375+ coins were produced. Bowers puts the mintage at about 500, Michael Wescott estimates 200+, and Breen suggests 175+. The 2016 Red Book lists the production at 600+.
