1866 Rays Nickel, PR67
First-Year Five Cent Nickel Coinage
1866 5C Rays PR67 NGC. Despite the existence of a few
1865-dated patterns that may or may not have been struck in 1865,
the 1866 Rays nickel was the first regular-issue coinage of the
five cent nickel denomination. A shortage of silver during and
following the Civil War had the U.S. Mint looking for coinage
alternatives. An alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel was chosen for
three-cent and five-cent pieces. Both denominations were previously
produced in silver in the form of small diameter three-cent coins
and half dimes. Coinage of both silver denominations continued
through 1873. This Superb Gem represents the first year of nickel
coinage in style, with delicate gold toning and faint iridescent
overtones. The fields are mirrored with no spots, and the design
