Description

Superb Proof 1866 Rays Nickel

1866 5C Rays PR67 NGC. Although a few patterns from the regular issue design were struck in 1865, the 1866 With Rays nickel represents the first year of issue, with examples available in all grades, Mint State and proof.
The first proof reverse was used to strike this example. Two reverse dies have been identified for the 1866 Rays proofs. This reverse, used only in 1866, has a prominent center dot, and the upper left vertical of the large 5 sharply doubled.
This Superb Gem proof has light gray color with subtle blue, lilac, and gold toning on each side. The fields are exquisitely preserved and fully mirrored, with light cameo contrast. Undoubtedly minted with special care as all of the design elements are boldly defined. Census: 4 in 67, 0 finer (8/07).(Registry values: N7079)
