Description

1866 Rays PR 65 PCGS. First year of issue for the Shield nickel design. Proofs of this important year are quite scarce and the original mintage was officially recorded as only 125 pieces, although we believe more were actually struck. This is a deeply reflective proof with the diagnostic center dot featured prominently on the reverse. Each side shows a light bit of ruddy patina with bright, mirrored fields and no surface flaws apparent. One of 66 pieces to have been so graded by PCGS (4/95).
