Description

Lovely 1867 With Rays Nickel in Proof

1866 Rays PR 65 PCGS. A brilliant gem showing the center dots on both sides (diagnostic of the proofs). This example is only barely toned and is very clean and well struck. A curious situation has developed concerning this date based on the information provided by PCGS and NGC. PCGS reports having graded 196 proofs in all grades (6/95). NGC reports having graded 109 proofs in all grades (4/95), for a combined total of 305 examples. The total mintage of this date has been estimated by Breen to be 125 or more, a figure representing the number of silver proof sets delivered by the mint. Breen's figure has been quoted and re-quoted for years, and each time this date appears it is touted as a great rarity in proof. Even allowing for resubmission to both grading services, it should be obvious that the long-held mintage figure of 125+ is grossly incorrect. Nevertheless, old ideas die slowly, and we suspect that this date will continue to command a hefty premium over the common dates for years to come. We just wanted to set the record straight.
