Description

Deeply Mirrored, Upper-End, Gem Proof 1866 Shield Nickel

1866 Rays PR 65 PCGS. Proofs of this important year are quite scarce. While the original mintage was officially recorded as only 125 pieces, more were obviously struck as quite a few more survive than the mintage would indicate. This is a deeply reflective proof with the diagnostic center dot featured prominently on the reverse. Both sides show only the slightest hint of pale golden patina and the fields have a mildly granular texture that seems common to proofs of this year.
