Description

1866 Rays PR 67 PCGS. Amazingly well preserved with razor sharp definition and solid reflective qualities under an even layer of delicate golden patina. Unlike the vast majority of these early nickel proofs, the surfaces appear to be totally free from carbon and only Mint-caused irregularities on the obverse rim in the vicinity of the date pose any appreciable distraction. The proof mintage of this first year Shield nickel has been underestimated for over a century, the figure often listed of 200 pieces is more likely double that number. This outstanding specimen, though, need not concern itself with such trivialties. Population: 1 in 67 (8 at NGC), none finer (3/99).
