Description

1867 No Rays Shield Nickel, PR66 Cameo
Attractive Early-State Dies

1867 5C No Rays PR66 Cameo PCGS. Reverse Style D, per the Bowers Guide Book of Shield and Liberty Head Nickels, showing stars pointing to the right-bottom serif of the E in STATES and between AM in AMERICA. The obverse die state is early, per Bowers, marginally (and here imperceptibly) different from that used with Reverse Style C, showing stars pointing under the upright of E and the center of A. This would mean this piece is likely an early delivery from the second striking, after the 25 proofs showing Style C had been delivered, and that would explain both the early die state and the cameo contrast remaining from the still-fresh dies. This is an extremely appealing and well-preserved example of this first-year type, showing rose, tan, and saffron patina on surfaces that show considerable mint frost on the devices and well-mirrored fields. A small planchet flaw appears in the lower-left obverse field near the rim. Population: 24 in 66 (1 in 66+) Cameo, 0 finer (1/16).(Registry values: N2998)
